Legal Gateway develops and supports programs that expand access to the federal justice system, advance civics education, and strengthen connections among the judiciary, legal community, students, and the public.
Federal Civil Rights Legal Clinic
The Federal Civil Rights Legal Clinic provides free, limited-scope legal assistance to individuals navigating federal civil rights matters and the federal court system without a lawyer. Volunteer attorneys help individuals understand their legal rights, evaluate whether their concerns may have a legal remedy, and identify possible next steps. The Clinic serves individuals through confidential, individual sessions in Seattle and Tacoma.
Civics Contest
The Western District of Washington Civics Contest invites high school students to explore the Constitution, the rule of law, and civic issues through an annual essay and video contest. Legal Gateway assists the U.S. District Court in administering the local contest, with winning entries advancing to the Ninth Circuit Civics Contest.
Summer Judicial Externship
The Summer Judicial Externship Program gives law students firsthand experience working with federal judges in the Western District of Washington. Legal Gateway supports the program, helping provide students with an immersive introduction to the federal courts, judicial decision-making, and legal research and writing.
